Verdée - Dans Nos Pas
Verdeeict: good
Here’s a newcomer in new French chanson. Light, but creative. With lyrics, but without neglecting the stereo ("Reine et Roi"). Fluid, but lively. Wise, but involved.
Whereas Robi still doesn’t seem to confirm the qualities noticed in her 1st album – alas – good news is new artists are coming out that I feel like their little sisters. No use to introduce Clara Luciani, who resembled the singer of "On ne Meurt plus d'Amour" by her bass lines and her heady choruses. As for Verdée, she resembles her by her phrasing, her poetic writing and the inventiveness of her arrangements ("Souviens-Toi", "Le Jour").
When you listen to Dans Nos Pas, you can see a similarity too with Émilie Simon (yet less electro), with La Féline (yet less pop), with Camicela (yet less dark), with Autour de Lucie (yet less guitar).
When you see Verdée, you’d swear you’re in front of young Michel Berger but, although she is a pianist like him, her tunes sometimes remind of old France Gall’s ("Le Dernier de Ceux").
This all should give you an overview. Or not.
Wearing a wicker basket on her right shoulder (but why??), the one who went 10 years sooner by the name of "Katia Goldmann et Lui" has got back in the running with the designation of Verdée. A name which sticks closely to her new project, to this style made of samples of multitudes of small noises found in nature and which make all her richness. Like Beethoven, but with other means. Nothing to do with Verdi, on the other hand!
The lyrics are commensurate, bucolic ("Le Cœur et la Sève"), thoughts about state of the world ("Dans Nos Pas") and of the planet ("Le Dernier de Ceux").
You can let yourself be captivated by the (false) nursery rhyme "L'Amour en Défaillance", whereas the wordless chorus of the languorous "Atome", made of high-pitched ooh ooh ooh’s, punctuated of off-beat deflagrations, should quickly inhabit you.
And you end up with "Mens-Moi" and its poignant theme: this masochistic request to the other, this painful exhortation to lie, to pretend to still love each other.
Now you must have grasped all the interest of Verdée’s soundscape, the newcomer. Good news.

Length is out of place. In line with popular French chanson and 7" singles of bygone days. Everything is under 4 minutes. Yet without containing neither any mini-song nor any interlude track, since there is always at least 2:30. And an average of 3:17 per song.
The shortest song ("Le Jour") is put at the beginning: so the listener won’t have time to zap to another artist as he’ll already be listening to the 2nd track.
I’d like sometimes to ligner a little more in some atmospheres, in "Atome" or in "Reine et Roi" (the two longest songs) for I feel the artist has some gas left in the tank... maybe reserved for live shows? -
