Stéphane Lopez - Polar Park OST
Polar star
Cover up warmly! We embark for the coldest village in France: "Retour à Mouthe", in Doubs (25). Polar = relating to North or South Pole. But polar, in French = a detective story, a thriller, too!
This is how the scene is set for this offbeat series, broadcast on Arte TV Channel last November, with Jean-Paul Rouve (here very far from his role in Les Tuche) and Guillaume Gouix, just as formidable.
Full of humor, this delicious series has everything going for it. Including its soundtrack! as we will see.
Classical music? Yes, with beautiful orchestral movements ("Le Monstre", "À Travers le Miroir", "L'ultima Cena") or pretty piano airs ("Être Aimé") and cello airs ("Un Nouveau Roman"). But not only that. Because what hooked me first were the songs, which are more of a folk obedience (guitar-voice). They are only 4, but 2 of them are duplicated ("Whispers of Owls", "Falling"): once magnificently interpreted by the Londoner Karina Ramage, and another time interpreted no less magnificently by the French actor Jérémy Barlozzo. The texts of these little masterpieces tell, figuratively, stories of owls, mermaids, blindness and forests.
The 3rd category of pieces that you will find is used to accompany the plot, to increase the suspense ("Psychoman"). Necessarily a little less pleasant to listen to without the images, but it's okay.
A common procedure in soundtracks: the repetition, and declination, of one or more themes. The melody of "Whispers of Owls" will perfectly fulfill the role of main theme and you will find it regularly ("Polar Park", "Tellement Pas Moi!"…)
At the end, this music shouldn't leave you cold, but cover up warmly anyway.

A lot of very short songs, it seems normal in a soundtrack, to stick to the short scenes. The ones where music was intended, in any case. 14 of the 26 tracks are less than 2 minutes long.
More surprisingly, there are also some very long tracks, including several atmospheres, several parts ("Femme Couchée Lisant", "L'Élixir", "C'est Pas Bien de Fouiller"). -
