Nadine Carina - Reverie
Dream a little dream…
What if Switzerland were the new goldmine of good music?
In the last century, we only knew Stephan Eicher, or almost. Since then, appeared Sophie Hunger, the excellent Rambling Wheels then Kadebostany. At last Puts Marie and Émilie Zoé, that I already talked you about. Here come Nadine Carina and her all pink album. Well, there was the Beatles’ white album blanc and Metallica’s black album, so why not!
The music is very nice, in genre minimalist folk full of emotion like 'my' Sophie Zelmani, perfect to fall asleep. But after 2 listenings there isn’t much which stays in head. Except the single "December" and its inevitable rocking – which reminds me of "This is the Life", Amy Macdonald’s hit.
So, I had to listen again, to see if I got enthusiastic too fast, or if on the contrary she was going to settle inside my head...
A few days and a few listening later, I had risen to the bait! Besides "December", the syncopated "Sparks" and the waltz "Backwater" hooked me. Then others. Actually, I think the song naming is responsible of preventing from easily identifying them. At least subtitles should be added. For instance, "Waking Tired (Long Long Way)", "Drowning (Away from all the People)", "Seaside (When He Goes Away)" or "Reverie (All the Time)".
And as for "Bright Eyes", I confess I had hardly paid attention to it, until I came across this video. It seems like a mechanical piano, but it’s not. Since then, I think of it all the time.
For a world of purity tucks itself into your ears, almost entirely orchestrated by the songwriter, at ease as much with guitar as with piano (basically, fifty-fifty).
As for the voice, in keeping with the theme of the album, it goes muffled, or even hazy ("Liverpool"). You might want to tell her: “Come on, sing for real, don’t just pretend you do!” Impossible to know whether she has a powerful voice or not. But you forgive her because her compositions are good.
Come on, let’s not do like all these tax opportunists: let’s turn musically to Switzerland, the new goldmine.

Long or short, no matter, since the artist dilutes time, stretches the words, like the anaesthetising "Reverie" (4:41 all the same).
In very short though, the interlude "Charms" (2:47) is the only instrumental recollection of the electro tries of her 2nd album, which she was right to drop for she is patently much better in folk music. However, this interesting track evokes Villeneuve’s testing for me. -
